The Bletchley Circle

The Fall season is approaching quickly and that means some of our favorite television shows will soon be returning! I'm personally excited for the third season of Downton Abbey! Of course there are always new shows that pop up as well. I was browsing around online earlier today for a Downton Abbey trailer but instead stumbled upon an ITV trailer for all of their current and new shows returning this Fall. I saw a couple of titles that caught my eye so naturally I Googled them haha. One in particular that I'm very interested in seeing is a series called The Bletchley Circle. I'm a huge fan of murder mysteries and this sounds right up my alley!

" Set in 1952, Susan, Millie, Lucy and Jean have returned to their normal lives, modestly setting aside the part they played in producing crucial intelligence, which helped the Allies to victory and shortened the war.

Until now that is…and the unresolved murders of Jane Hart and Patricia Oakes. With her handwritten charts of numbers, dates and times and stretched lines of wool connecting pins to clips, Susan has spotted a pattern of behaviour no-one else has…

Four ordinary women with an extraordinary flair for code-breaking and razor-sharp intelligence skills are the focus of ITV’s new murder mystery drama, The Bletchley Circle." - ITV.com

Here is a trailer for the series:

The period drama is set to premiere on September 6th!

Are there any shows you are looking forward to this Fall?

Movie of the Week: Vivacious Lady (1938)

Vivacious Lady

Starring: Ginger Rogers and Jimmy Stewart
Directed By: George Stevens
Synopsis: After a whirlwind courtship, a nightclub singer has to adjust to her professor husband's conservative family.

Another one of my favorites! It's one of the best romantic comedies in my opinion. It has everything you could want in a film. A great director, superb dialogue and a fabulous cast! Ginger and Jimmy's on screen chemistry is just perfect. I read somewhere that they were dating at the time so maybe that had something to do with it? ;) One of my all time favorite movie scenes is when Ginger's character, Francey, gets into a bit of a cat fight with Frances Mercer's character, Helen. It's absolutely hilarious, I still laugh out loud every time I watch it!

The only negative thing I can say is that this film is not available to purchase on dvd! I'm quite baffled by that. Hopefully it will be available to purchase at some point in the future because I'd love to add it to my collection! However, it is available on YouTube to watch.

What I'm Loving Wednesday

1. The Dark Knight Rises. I saw this movie a couple of nights ago and loved it! It was everything I'd hoped for. Plus I have a gigantic crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt and I thought he did an excellent job. The ending left it open for a possible sequel and I hope there's going to be one!

2. American Rose. I bought this book last week and like it so far! It's all about burlesque entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee.

3. 2012 Olympics! My favorite event is gymnastics. I was so happy when the U.S. won the team competition!

4. The Amazing Spider-Man Pullover. Okay I saw this in Forever 21 yesterday as I was walking out and had to have it! I love Marvel and Spider-Man is one of my favorites!

5. Blue Diamond Almond Coconut Milk. I don't really consume a whole lot of dairy so I usually drink almond milk but I saw this at the store and it intrigued me. It's so delicious! To me it tastes like an Almond Joy minus the chocolate haha.

6. The Balm Nude Tude Palette. I've been wanting this eye shadow palette for quite some time. Hautelook had a 50% off sale on The Balm products a few weeks back so I snatched one up! The packaging is darling and the colors are nice and pigmented. I don't wear too many bright colors so this palette is perfect for me!

7. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. I do get the occasional breakout and this stuff works wonders! You apply it at night. Just take a q-tip and dip it in the solution and dab it on any blemishes you may have. By the morning the blemish reduces in size greatly! I've been a fan of Mario Badescu products for a few years now and think they are wonderful.

Tutorial: Everyday Vintage Hair

Hello my dears!

I apologize for the lack of posts this past week. I've been quite busy and have not had much time. I hope that today's post will make up for it!

This is my typical everyday vintage hairstyle. It's great for ladies who have longer hair like me but I'm sure it would look just as nice on a gal with shorter hair! What I love about setting my hair the night before is that it saves so much time in the morning when you are getting ready. All I have to do is put my makeup on and then take the rollers out and brush until I get the look I want. So I hope you enjoy this tutorial and it is helpful to some of you!

1

1. I started out with slightly damp hair the night before. I used foam rollers to set the back of my hair. The size of the roller you use is up to you. If you want tight curls use smaller rollers and if you want more loose curls go for a bigger size. The ones I used were about 1".

Smith's Minted Rose lip balm

Happy Friday my lovely readers! :)

Today I'll be doing a mini review on the Smith's Minted Rose lip balm. Linda from Rosebud Perfume Co. liked my last review so much she offered to send me a tube of their new Minted Rose lip balm! Of course I happily accepted!

Minted Rose is such a lovely flavor made from a blend of trade secret essential oils and pure peppermint oil. It comes in the convenient tube packaging with charming mint green accents. The balm has a nice tingly sensation on the lips and is quite refreshing! It's just as moisturizing as the original but with with a wonderful minty zing! Many people have actually used this product for massage or applied it to their temples to help relieve headaches and tension. Smith's lip balms have so many uses other than moisturizing your lips and that's one of the reasons I love them!

Linda was also kind enough to provide an extra tube of the Minted Rose lip balm for one of my lucky readers! I'm so excited to be having my first giveaway!

Review: Gilded Lily Beauty

Gilded Lily Beauty

I love Etsy and it’s community of small businesses. I often browse around looking for vintage clothing and accessories or natural beauty products. Luckily I stumbled upon Gilded Lily Beauty! Gilded Lily Beauty is run by the very sweet Candace who makes bath and body products by hand. Her line of products are inspired by the culture of the 1920’s and 1930’s. I must admit that the packaging was what caught my eye and led me to her shop! I’m a sucker for any sort of vintage or retro packaging haha. All of her products have such darling names as well, including “Victory Garden” and “Boudoir”.

Candace was kind enough to send me a couple of her products for review. I was so excited to receive them! A few days later I got a package containing a bottle of “Silk Stockings” hand and body lotion, a bar of “Victory Garden” goat’s milk soap and a sample of the “Boudoir” goat’s milk soap. Of course I smelled everything right away and it was heavenly!

Gilded Lily Beauty

Silk Stockings Hand & Body Lotion ($15): I picked out this lotion purely for the name and I’m glad I did! I’m not kidding you all when I say that this is probably my new favorite lotion. Silk Stockings has an almond, vanilla, cocoa and musk scent and it’s truly delightful! It contains sunflower oil and coconut oil combined with shea butter and aloe which makes a wonderfully rich and creamy texture. There is also silk amino acids in the lotion to help soften the skin. What I love most about this product is that it absorbs into the skin so fast! It doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy at all.

Gilded Lily Beauty

Gilded Lily Beauty

Victory Garden Goat’s Milk Soap ($7): First of all I love the name of this soap! Victory Gardens were vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted on private residences and parks during WW1 and WW2 to increase food production.

The soap itself has a beautiful floral design on top. It’s so pretty I almost didn’t want to use it! As soon as I removed the packaging I could instantly smell sweet blackberries! There is also a hint of sage which is very nice. This soap also contains goat’s milk which makes a nice creamy lather. Goat’s milk has lactic acid in it and lactic acid is great for naturally exfoliating the skin. I felt nice and clean after using it but not super dry and tight like some soaps can do!

Boudoir Goat’s Milk Soap ($7): This soap smells so beautiful! It immediately made me think of old Hollywood. Boudoir has a rich green fig, coconut milk and musk scent. I usually don’t like musk because it tends to give me a headache but the musk in this soap isn’t too overpowering and was actually very nice. I’m definitely going to purchase a full bar of this soap next time!

I can honestly say that I love each product I received and think they smell just lovely! I only review products on my blog that I believe in and stand behind 100%. I especially like to support smaller companies that create quality products. Candace makes a wonderful line of products at fair prices. With that being said I highly recommend checking out Gilded Lily Beauty.

Gilded Lily Products can be purchased at http://www.etsy.com/shop/GildedLilyBeauty

*NOTE: These products were sent to me free of charge for reviewing purposes. I was not paid for this review and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Family Photos

Happy Friday!

I love looking at old photographs. Whenever I was at my grandma's house I always found myself spending lengthy periods of time looking through her photo albums (Or watching Shirley Temple movies!). I enjoyed it immensely!

For today's post I just wanted to simply share some of my old family photos...

Dad and Grandpa
This is my favorite picture of my dad and grandpa. Written in pencil on the back it says "Taken in May 1944. Harry was just out of boot training. Neal was 2 years old."

2. The Amazing Spider-Man. I finally got to see it a couple nights ago and thought it was great! I'm a bit of a Marvel lover.

3. Gilded Lily Beauty. I'm so glad I discovered this shop on Etsy! Candace makes soaps and lotions inspired by the 1920's and 1930's. I'm actually going to be posting a review on a couple of her products next week! :)

4. The Lily Dress in Tipsy Elephant Print from Golightly. I had some store credit over at PinupGIrlClothing.com and decided to use some if it on this dress! It's such an adorable print and perfect for summer! It's also a great length on me. I'm only 5'2" and love when I don't have to get things hemmed haha.

Movie of the Week: All About Eve (1950)

All About Eve

Starring: Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders and Celeste Holm
Directed By: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Synopsis: An ambitious young actress tries to take over a star's career and love life.

My Thoughts: I was saddened to hear about the passing of Celeste Holm this week. In remembrance I decided to choose All About Eve as the movie of the week. I absolutely love All About Eve! Bette Davis's performance as Margo Channing is one of her greatest in my opinion. Anne Baxter's character, Eve, is such a ruthless and self-serving woman. She played her part well and will definitely be a character you'll love to despise! You'll also get to see a brief performance by a young Marilyn Monroe before her leap to fame. Oh and of course we can't forget Celeste Holm's charming performance as Karen Richards. The acting in this film is wonderful and the dialog is excellent. It's such a classic film that I think everyone should see at least once! Also, it doesn't hurt that it was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won 6 including Best Picture. So if you haven't seen it yet I suggest you get right to it!

Review: Rosebud Lip Balm Trio

Rosebud Medley of Lip Balm Tubes

"The Rosebud Perfume Company, Inc. was founded by George F. Smith in 1895. The business began in a small drugstore across the street from what is now the "Rosebud Building". The Rosebud Perfume Company, Inc. distributes its salves and lip balms throughout the world and is enjoyed by celebrities, athletes, homemakers, and health care providers alike." - rosebudperfume.com

Once known as Smith's "Balsam of Rosebuds" is now what we know as Smith's "Rosebud Salve". Linda over at Rosebud Perfume Co. was kind enough to send me their Rosebud Medley of Lip Balm Tubes for review. I was quite excited because Smith's Rosebud Salve has become a bit of a cult product in the beauty community.

Rosebud Medley of Lip Balm Tubes

The Rosebud Perfume Co. is based in Woodsboro, Maryland so my package arrived quickly since I live in Virginia Beach. First of all the packaging of this product is stunning! The tubes are encased in a beautiful circular tin embossed with the Rosebud logo. Inside the tin was a tube of the Rosebud Salve, Strawberry Lip Balm and Mocha Rose Lip Balm.

Rosebud Medley of Lip Balm Tubes

Smith's Rosebud Salve: This salve has been a favorite since 1892! It must be because of it's many uses. For instance you can use it as an eye makeup remover, cuticle softener and sunburn easer. You can even use it around the eyes or on the throat for dry or wrinkled skin. It also has many cosmetic uses! Rosebud Salve can be used to tame eyebrows, smooth any fly-aways or frizzy hair, and as an eye makeup base. I like to use it as my nighttime lip moisturizer. It has a nice rose scent and emollient texture. My lips are super soft in the morning!

Strawberry Lip Balm: This has all of the goodness of the original balm but with a trade secret blend of strawberry flavors! I love strawberries so I was delighted to see it when I opened the tin! It's a great flavor for the summer months.

Mocha Rose Lip Balm: I didn't even know this scent existed and was very intrigued. It ended up being my favorite out of the three! I must admit that I have a bit of a sweet tooth so of course I thought this smelled amazing. Again, it's just as great as the original but with a delicious chocolate café scent!

I would definitely recommend any of the Smith's lip balms. They are great multipurpose products sold at a reasonable price. Most of the lip balm tubes and tins range from $6-$8. You may purchase Rosebud Perfume Co. products at your local Sephora. For a full list of other retailers please click here.

3. Land Girls. I was browsing through Netflix the other night and saw they had added it. I'm addicted to BBC dramas and mini-series so I started watching it immediately and was sucked in! It's about the lives of four girls in the Women's Land Army during World War 2.

4. These Emerald City Sandals from PLASTICLAND! I need to own these sooner than later.

5. My new Martha Stewart cast iron casserole. This may sound silly to some of you but I love to cook and I've been dying for a cast iron casserole! It was on sale last week so we bought one in the orange color and it's beautiful!

6. Josie Maran Argan Oil. I received a deluxe sample size from Sephora and have been using it as my evening moisturizer. I was skeptical as first because I do have oily skin but it doesn't make me feel greasy and my skin feels so soft in the morning!

Summer Makeup for the Vintage Lovin' Gal

Vintage Summer Makeup

Since it's been unbearably hot outside these past few weeks I thought I would share some tips on summer makeup. You can still get that vintage glamour look without having to worry about your makeup melting off your face!

Face:
First and most importantly..wear a sunscreen! Please always remember to use a sunscreen! Especially if you are super pale like me haha. Try to find products that at least contain an SPF of 20. Also try to find a formulation that works well with your skin type. I always use an oil-free sunscreen or moisturizer.

If you are like me and have combo to oily skin then I would suggest using a mineral or powder foundation. I usually wear Revlon ColorStay liquid foundation but during the summer months I'll wear Bare Minerals. Then I apply some blush. My favorite at the moment is Frat Boy by The Balm. It's the perfect peachy-apricot shade! I then like to finish my makeup with Urban Decay's De-Slick Oil-Control makeup setting spray. It helps with shine and I find that my makeup does last longer!

If you have normal to dry skin I would try using a tinted moisturizer to even out the skin tone. Many well known makeup brands like Laura Mercier carry tinted moisturizers. If you are on a budget you could always stop by your local drugstore to find one! If you need more coverage just apply concealer where it's needed. Then you can set your makeup as you normally would.

Eyes:
Most days I will just fill in my brows with a powder and wear eyeliner and mascara. I like to use MAC's fluidline in Blacktrack for my winged liner. It's a gel liner and has great staying power. My go-to mascara is CoverGirl LashBlast. Now you may want to use a waterproof mascara if you think you'll be outside for a long period of time. I prefer not to use waterproof unless I have to because I find that it takes me ages to get off and sometimes I end up loosing a eyelash or two!

If you choose to wear eyeshadow try using something that is meant to be long wearing or use a base underneath so that the color will last much longer. It will also prevent the shadow from creasing. For oily lids a product like Urban Decay's Primer Potion works wonders! If you have normal or dry lids I have heard that Two Faced Shadow Insurance is great.

Lips:
Now I love my lipstick but lip stains can be your best friend during the summer! Most of the time they are waterproof and last all day long. You also won't have to worry about touching up throughout the day which is very convenient! My favorite lip product is the L'Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour. It comes in so many shades of colors including red! Right now I have this product in the shade Target Red. I believe it was a limited edition color but they have other shades of red to choose from. One product I've been wanting to try is Tarte's LipSurgence lip stain. They carry a matte red color called Firey and I'm sure it's wonderful!

Well I hope you all enjoyed this post and that it has helped some of you! If you have any further questions please comment on this post or email me. I would be more than happy to help! :)

Movie of the Week: The Help (2011)

The Help
Starring: Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer
Directed By: Tate Taylor
Synopsis: An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. - IMDB

My Thoughts: The Help is based on a novel by Kathryn Stockett. I have not read the novel so I can't compare it to the film but I thought the film was just fantastic! The film was cast wonderfully in bringing this story to life. I adore Emma Stone and this was really her first dramatic role and I thought she did very well as Skeeter. The maids, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, were really the stars of this film. Such amazing acting My favorite character has to be Celia played by Jessica Chastain. She had me laughing up a storm! Oh and I can't forget Bryce Dallas Howard as Hilly. Her character is just plain evil. She does a great job of getting the audience to hate her. This film has it's fair share of funny parts but it also has it's emotional ones. I'll admit that I actually cried a couple of times but it's so compelling you just can't help it! Overall I think this movie is excellent and tells an amazing story. A must see!

Bomb Girls

Bomb Girls
Yesterday I was browsing some blogs and stumbled across a post about a Canadian mini-series called Bomb Girls. I was instantly intrigued because it takes place during World War 2 and I'm obsessed with costume dramas. It tells the stories of women who risked their lives working in a munitions factory building bombs for the Allied forces.

Bomb Girls Silent film star Mary Pickford and the real Bomb Girls. Mary Pickford and the real bomb girls
So of course I started watching it online and was instantly addicted! I watched 5 out of the 6 parts haha. Now I must admit the acting isn't always superb but it's still worth watching. Bomb Girls was originally only supposed to be 6 parts but to my delight it was picked up for 12 more episodes! There's no word on when season 2 will be airing yet but I will definitely keep those of you who are interested updated!

Scarlett Johansson in Black Dahlia Inspired Makeup Tutorial

Scarlett Johansson as Kay Lake in The Black Dahlia

Scarlett Johansson is one of my favorite modern actresses. She's beautiful, intelligent, funny and of course she's one darn good actress! One of my favorite looks on her is when she portrayed Kay Lake in The Black Dahlia. The film itself isn't the greatest but I love the hair, makeup and costumes so I can overlook that haha. I did some research online and found out how makeup artist Heba Thorisdottir created Scarlett's look. It was inspired and created to match film noir in 1946 to 1947. Heba used three different shades of red on Scarlett from Julie Hewett's Film Noir Collection. Of course I was pleased when I read this..I love the Film Noir lipsticks! Nude Noir was used for a bare look, Rouge Noir for everyday and Femme Noir for a more dramatic look. I love this look so much that I filmed a makeup tutorial inspired by it! It's a very easy everyday 40's look and I hope you enjoy!

My Favorite Red Lipstick

"What is your favorite red lipstick?" is one question I get asked a lot! My answer always used to be MAC's Russian Red but as of last year it has changed.

Julie Hewett Noir Lipstick in Rouge Noir

Julie Hewett's company was generous enough to provide me with a lipstick shade of my choice to review. I chose Rouge Noir and ended up loving it so much that it is now my all time favorite red lipstick! It really is the perfect retro red in my opinion. It's a matte lipstick but doesn't feel overly drying which is one of the reasons I prefer it over MAC. It also has an incredible staying power! I filmed a more in depth review of this product that I posted on my YouTube channel a few months back.

Movie of the Week: The Artist (2011)

The Artist

Starring: Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo
Directed By: Michel Hazanavicius
Synopsis: Silent movie star George Valentin bemoans the coming era of talking pictures and fades into oblivion and self-destruction, but finds sparks with Peppy Miller, a young dancer lighting up talkies like no one else.

My Thoughts: I finally got a chance to watch The Artist a few nights ago. Wow! This film is truly wonderful! I became so immersed that there were a few times where I forgot I was watching a modern movie. The lead actors were so charming and funny. They did an amazing job! It's no surprise this film was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won five including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. It was actually the first mainly silent film to win Best Picture since Wings (1927). I strongly recommend watching The Artist even if you don't think you'd enjoy watching a silent film. You may be pleasantly surprised!
